Here is Taz's Corner, written by Taz each and ever week. There will be something new and exciting so please stay tuned :-)

Welcome to another edition

of Taz's Corner

Hi Readers,

Today I have that special treat for you. An Interview with none other then Cybertown owner and founder, Hawk. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did writing it.

1) How did the idea of Cybertown come to you?

SFX and I spent 2-3 months in early 1995 exploring the net and became fascinated with its potential as a huge international canvas and started to look at what could we put online that would be different and that would be worthwhile and that would give something back to the community of the net from which we had gained so much.

At first we were looking at doing a magazine but as we looked at all the different parts of a magazine we felt that it would be more compelling and more interesting as a town.

At first the early designs for the town were kind of cartoon-like but then one night SFX in his house and me in mine both simultaneously realized that it should be set in the future as that would give us much more latitude in what we could create.

We spent the next 3 months furiously creating and launched the first 250 pages on June 15th 1995.

2) When you first started Cybertown, what type of system was it running on and what kinds of advancements have you made since the beginning?

With regard to the server, I don't know - some kind of elementary Linux box. The work we did creating it was done mostly on 486 DX's and a Mac. Now it's housed on several servers that are mostly dual-PIII's with a couple of gigs of RAM each.

3) I read somewhere that you are a musician. How long have you been doing that? What instrument(s) do you play? Do you have a band and if so, is there anywhere we could listen to your music?

I've been playing guitar since the 60's at school and have had various bands. In 1968 I started producing records and then spent about 20 years in the music business making records and generally having a great time! I've owned recording studios since the early 80's and still have a great PC-based studio in my house.

I also play bass and some keys and a little drums. I had a band in LA until I moved to Florida about 8 months ago. I keep meaning to put some of my productions online but haven't really done so except for a real hodge-podge of bits and pieces of demos put up years ago which sound awful because they were in the early days of RealAudio (before mp3) when the quality was very poor. If anyone's brave enough, they're at http://www.cybertown.com/blues.html

4) What part of the world are you from?

Liverpool, England.

5) Some of our female readers want to know, are you single or married?

Single, still looking for "the one".

6) What are your other hobbies aside from Cybertown and Music?

I'm addicted to recording and I love playing. I love good movies and have a large collection. The quest for knowledge. Travel. Helping people. Snuggling.

7) With Cybertown now being pay, Has the amount of people that signed up for subscription suprised you? Is the amount less then, more then or about what you expected?

More than I expected - and thank you all. I'm also paid up for the next couple of months myself too :)

8) Could you share a little information about things you have planned for Cybertown? Upcoming events? Changes? Cybertown Next Generation?

We have a meeting coming up next month to discuss these very isssues. The introduction of "Silhouette" will of course be a change and should be very fun for families. We still want to do NG of course. And yes, we plan new places, events, games, contests etc.

9) If a rooster lays an egg on a slanted roof, what side will it roll down?

I'd be very surprised if a rooster laid an egg.

10) Is Cybertown what you expected it to be after being online in the respect it is now for over 4 years?

Well, come this June it will have been online for 8 years and it has become in many ways what we hoped and also in many ways more than we expected.

11) How did the market crash and subsequent fall out of investors afraid to invest in internet technology affect you?

It affected us very badly. We went from a staff of 25 to a staff of 1 (me) and if it hadn't been for the selfless work of the Caretakers we wouldn't have survived. Since potential sponsors became so cautious we have had to look at how to enable CT to become self-supporting and, even though I had to be dragged kicking and screaming into it, the result was the subscription system that we have now implemented.

12) Anything you wish to add?

If Taz laid an egg on a slanted roof, what side will it roll down?

I just want to personally thank you for taking the time out to answer the questions. I also want to thank you for finding alternatives to keep Cybertown alive on the net. I have personally known you for almost 4 years and I can say you are devoted to finding ways to keep Cybertown up and running and making it the best it can be. Thank you for giving us all a place we can meet people from all over the world and do it in a setting that is fun.

You're more than welcome :)

Hawk

Respectfully,

Taz
