Steven Kash Thursday, May 22, 2003
Steven Alan Kash, 51, passed away May 16, 2003, in Napa. He was born July 21, 1951, in San Rafael.
Steve was a man who was blessed in many ways. Those who knew him understand this well. They say the measure of a man is not what he has but, by the people who surround him. Steve had a way of making you feel that you were his best friend, even strangers felt this by him. For this reason it can be confidently said that Steve had hundreds of close personal friends. Steve did so many kind things for so many people that we are compelled to look deeper into this man's short but remarkable life.
At the center of Steve's world was his wife and children. His lovely wife, Beverly, was the very definition of a wife: loving, patient, gentle, nurturing, supportive and yet Bev would not hesitate to stand toe to toe and side by side with her husband to protect her family. And in this time we can add another definition to this loving woman, that of quiet strength through adversity. If you were to ask Steve how did he do what he did he would simply point in the direction of Bev.
Steven and Beverly were blessed with two children: Alicia, their daughter now 24 and on her own with plans to marry her fiancé when he returns from wherever the U.S. military has sent him. We see in Alicia the combination of her father and mother; funny, smart, pretty, nurturing, and strong willed, yet kind and loving. Steve and Bev never passed up an opportunity to tell you how very proud they were of her. Their son, Jason, now 21, is the envy of his peers. A chip off the old block, he is athletic, handsome, talented, and could have grabbed that baseball scholarship but, and this points back to Steven and Beverly, after Sept. 11 has decided to become a forensic fire inspector. Off for the summer from college to be home with his mom and dad to help around the house. Here is a young man that has it in all the departments, but true to his upbringing, he will follow his heart and help people in need.
Steve is also survived by a sister, Sandra Ramey, of Salinas and three brothers, Robert Kash of Novato, Kevin Kash of San Rafael and James Kash also of Novato. Ask any one of them who showed them how to play guitar or piano and they will tell you without a doubt that it was Steve who as a child, learned to play the piano just by watching his mother. When the brothers needed a drummer, Steve simply gave up the bass and the guitar and piano and took up the drums. He kept the beat and kept it strong.
As we widen the focus of this man's life we find his co-workers, who upon hearing of his passing, have kept up a steady stream of calls and visits and flowers and notes of encouragement to his family and to remind them of their love and respect for him.
Widening further still, we find that Steven was something of a tech head and loved the computer and more specifically the Internet. For the last nine years he was involved in the development of a virtual community and was even the mayor of a cyber town called Colony City. Too difficult to explain here but the people of Pointworld and Colony City, some three quarters of a million people from all over the world actually elected this man to be their mayor. That, in some small way shows you the character of this man Steven Kash.
Steve was passionate about his beliefs. When he learned that there were four countries that would not back the U.S. in its war against terrorism, he refused to eat French fries, German chocolate cake, Russian vodka, or Chinese food; this was tongue in cheek but he meant what he said.
When we reflect on this man's life, we are not sad for him but his family and friends. Steve always lived life to the fullest and each day was a new adventure for him. God indeed blessed this man in so many ways that all we can do, those of us who knew him, is try to somehow figure out what Steve would have done today. I know he would have started out the day trying to help one of us first.
Services will be held Friday, May 23 at 11 a.m. at Tulocay Cemetery, 411 Coombsville Rd., Napa.
A memorial fund has been set up at Vintage Bank of Napa for his friends from all over the world who may wish to express their love for this remarkable man that way.
